Shared visual language helps movements grow
Free Assange: Global campaign communication
Building a visual language for a global grassroots campaign
Over fourteen years I developed thousands of original communication assets for the international Free Assange campaign — from posters and publications to billboards, social media graphics and campaign materials used around the world.
Rather than creating a single campaign identity, the work developed as an evolving communication system that could be adopted and adapted by independent campaign groups worldwide. While visual styles changed over time, recurring imagery — particularly the US flag gag over Assange’s face — helped build recognition across countries and campaigns.
The communication system expanded continuously in response to changing events, supporting everything from demonstrations and conferences to publications, billboards, exhibitions, press materials and social media. Speed, consistency and adaptability were essential throughout the campaign.
The gallery below presents a small selection from thousands of campaign materials produced over more than a decade.
